Wings Of The Warners - Modoc Migratory Bird Festival
The favorite bird festival in northern California happens on September 20 & 21 this year. The Wings of the Warners Migratory Bird Festival will take place on Saturday at Veteranís Memorial Park on South Main. Sundayís bird walk will meet at the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge headquarters and visitor center building.

Activities begin on Saturday with a Pit River Clean-Up. Meet at the River Center Booth in Veteranís Park to sign-up. Gloves, litter bags and a leader provide an opportunity to explore the Pit River as it flows through Alturas.

Bird Festival booths and activities open at 9:30 AM at Veteranís Park. Exhibitors include Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, Eagle Peak Wildlife & Raptor Rehabilitation. Wild Things, Inc. will present a live raptor demonstration at 10:30. Other exhibitors include The River Center, Modoc National Forest, BLM, and The Friends of the Refuge sponsored Photo Contest Booth. The Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale. The High Plateau Humane Society will have BBQ lunch selections for $6. Sale proceeds from tamales by Migrant Education fund a local student scholarship. Local artists and crafters will offer beautiful creations, including the popular ceramics by Dick Mackey, the special wood and metal crafting by Doug Dollarhide and amazing gourd designs by Linda LaNeave.

A booth featuring photographs of Modoc birds will display entries in a contest with winners announced on Saturday. Childrenís activities including arts and crafts, games and a duck calling contest make it a great family event. Live bird demonstrations will feature up close viewing of raptors. Music and good company add to the wonderful atmosphere during the festival that concludes Saturday activities at 3:30 PM.

Early Sunday morning, at 8:00 AM, a bird walk guided by an expert birder will provide viewing of Sandhill Cranes and water fowl. Meet at the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge headquarters.
